Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Please Help Settle (Ridiculous) Argument

Getting right to the point, I have somewhere in my
vast collection of cassettes (which have been stored away
for decades untouched in various locations) a copy of the Dead in Jamaica on 1982-11-26.
At the very beginning of that tape, you can clearly hear
a very short burst of conversation where Phil seems to
be freaking out at some roadie. Phil could be very abrasive
to crowd and band alike in the earlier years (not that I don't worship the ground he walks on...), and in this case he's really reaming some poor guy out about some technical shortcoming.
What's funny is he suddenly realizes his mike
is live and immediately he changes his tone of voice to
a much more reasonable tone and ends up saying "..so we're going to fix it, okay?"
I used to play this (now essentially unretrievable)
cassette to folks all the time. The problem is, many years
later, most people say this incident never happened since
it doesn't show up on any other existing copy. The very
limited number of people I know who went to see them in Jamaica are divided on this, with a small minority claiming
it most definitely did happen.
This has grown into a raging debate. My suspicion is
that my tape somehow captured a "Phil channel" that wasn't
(the show was seconds from starting) active on the
main P.A., or Phil's voice was picked up on a mike used
by a roadie. Those standing closest to Phil might have
witnessed the episode while the majority of the crowd
did not.
Or some-one may have just spliced it in for the
hell of it. My tape did NOT have the guy introducing the
Dead, but went straight to the opening bars of Sugaree
directly after the Phil speech segment.
Can anyone clear this up?

You consider '82 the "earlier years?"

So Phil told him to fuckin fix it. The word "fuck" is nothing special to a bunch of guys who say it in every day conversations. Many of the Jerry Garcia interviews are laced with "fuck".

Robert Hunter deliberately used the word, "fucker" in Wharf Rat as a protest against US Government censorship. It's hardly a shock, since Bobby and Brent began inserting the word "fuck" into their songs on stage in the mid 80s.

It was a pain in the ass at first; but David Gans found better ways to censor these songs for the syndicated Grateful Dead Hour, and didn't ruin our buzzes with those annoying "bleep" sounds...

I think he was saying that there's documentation of it in the earlier years not that 82 is earlier years. Or maybe I'm wrong

I took it to mean "early" as in "before Phil stopped drinking."

Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.

Yeah, Phil seems, at least in public , to have mellowed quite a bit . In 82 , I believe he was still drinking a bit . I know Mickey could be extremely demanding of the roadies , and Pigpen's " I'm gonna rip off your head and shit down your throat" certainly must have made an impression on the hapless sound man !

Do you know precisely which recording or which song? Maybe I didn't have my volume up high enough between songs but I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary on this one:

The SUNY shows were being run by the students. The Dead tried in vain to get their own folks in place, but the SUNYites were adamant. Thus, these shows tend to be weak. Weir and Garcia were extremely pissed; Pig was really just screwing with the guy. Nonetheless, they played the last ever Viola Lee, which surprised all of us.

every time I listen to that show, I hear hear Phil come through my speaks with a vicious "FIX IT!".
Gets me every time - I do believe you when you say you've got a recording of the whole conversation. I'll check mine again - I think I only have the FIX IT! portion, but maybe in the background I can hear the whole thing...
